Sir, - Those in support of the US and British action in Afghanistan should be grateful that this kind of "new war" was not favoured by the British government when dealing with the Troubles. Had this been the case, the Irish population could have looked forward to aerial bombing raids on Belfast, Dublin and Cork, in addition to Downing Street publicly and overtly supporting loyalist paramilitaries in an attempt to take out the responsible IRA cells following the Guilford, Hyde Park and Brighton bombings.
What an interesting way to deal with terrorism? - Yours, etc.,
Alan Glasgow, Blackrock, Co Dublin.
