Sir, - With a submerged metaphor eloquent of a variety of Judases, His Grace, the Archbishop of Cardiff, Dr John Aloysius Ward, announced his resignation at a recent press conference (The Irish Times, October 27th). He represented himself as the victim of gross disloyalty of his priests and people.
One of his parish priests said, in response, that he had "displayed a frightening combination of stupidity and arrogance".
Not exactly. He simply had an administrative style - not unknown in Ireland - now out of date. As Archbishop Joseph Hurley, leader of the Church in Florida, when Florida was but one diocese instead of its present seven, once told his vicar general: "I am running this diocese . . . I shall set the policy". - Yours, etc.,
E. Leo McManus, Heron Lakes, Venice, Florida.
