Sir, - It appears that the people of Ireland have finally swept away the remnants of colonised thinking and are taking a leadership role in the world of peace and reconciliation. Saying yes to different ways of looking at land and borders is letting go not only of the past 70 years of Irish history but also of an archaic, tribal reaction of settling conflicts with murder and violence. I hope countries such as Israel, India, Pakistan and the former Yugoslavia will take particular note of what appears to be the beginning of a new way of recognising similarities and accepting differences.
What a great gift the people of Ireland have given themselves and the world today! Thank you. - Yours, etc., Oonagh Berry,
Ottawa,
Canada.
