Madam, - In your Editorial "Clear Vote for an Enlarged Europe" (October 21st), you expressed the hope that the measures introduced to facilitate debate on European affairs will be sustained. I suggest that there is a huge deficit of knowledge and understanding of European issues among politicians. A programme of education, without junketeering, should be compulsory for TDs and county councillors.

Secondly, all secondary and third-level syllabuses should be critically appraised for levels of relevancy to the European context. Finally, it seems that the media - press, radio and television - have failed in recent years to inform and educate the Irish community on European affairs. This criticism applies especially to RTÉ.

Let's begin to ensure that our role at the heart of Europe will be informed. - Yours, etc.,
