A chara, - Who decides when our national assembly assembles? To hand the final call to the party - political system and hence to the Taoiseach of the day, makes a mockery of our parliament's role in providing checks and balances under Bunreacht na hÉireann.
The chairman of Seanad Éireann and the Ceann Chomhairle of the Dáil, together with the Chief Justice, stand in for Uachtaráin na hÉireann in her absence. Why not give them the discretion to recall their respective assemblies, provided a significant minority (say 30 per cent or so) so wish and the issue is of sufficient intrinsic importance, to warrant the extra Exchequer expenditure? - Is mise,
