Madam, - I'm not sure what Mr Thompson (Nov 6th) expects to find in a Dublin pub, but Dubliners singing rebel songs is one I'd at least not be too surprised by.

This has been the case on all of my three visits from New York in recent years.

I've stayed in his neighbourhood of Drumcondra and gone out for a drink in the evenings, to Quinn's and other local hostelries on the Drumcondra Road; and when they've had live music there's always been songs with what I'd call a historical flavour.

Then the evening's entertainment has ended with A Soldier's Song, for which I've dutifully shuffled to my feet.

Maybe Mr Thompson should go for a nice quiet cappuccino instead.
