RE-RUNNING NICE REFERENDUM

Sir, - Joe Murray of Afri (March 5th) 2002 ), is frustrated at "the prospect of the \ treaty being put to the people again" in a second referendum. The question of introducing a divorce jurisdiction was put twice to "the Irish people" in referendums, with different results. Does Mr Murray think that was out of order and "an attack on democracy", as another group has suggested (The Irish Times, February 25th)? Should we have a third divorce referendum to reverse that decision?

I seem to remember much being made in both divorce campaigns of the "frustration" experienced by "thousands" of Irish people in, or affected by, collapsed marital relationships. Possibly Mr Murray might also spare a thought for the frustration of large numbers of people in the applicant and pre-applicant states who would like to be part of our European Union - but as of June 2001, "don't know where, don't know when". - Yours etc.,
