Sir, - Western leaders have somehow managed to work themselves into a most dire and lethal trap in the Balkans. If NATO had taken no action, the Serbs would continue their barbarous ethnic cleansing of Kosovo, and thousands and thousands of Albanians would be killed or cast adrift upon a shame-faced and unwelcoming world. Now NATO has taken action (by killing Serbs, how else?), the Serbs will continue their barbarous ethnic cleansing, only rather more abruptly, probably by means of massacre upon a scale we have not yet witnessed.
And this convocation of serial blunderers is the very same NATO to which certain Irish politicians are anxious to affiliate the (unconsulted) Irish people, either directly or through some such "front" as the PfP? Are they all deaf and blind in the major parties in Leinster House? More to the point, do they suppose that everyone else is? - Yours, etc., John Arden,
