MARCHING TUNE

Sir, - It would be no surrender if the Orangemen changed their tune when marching near the enclaves of the other tradition. No nationalist could lodge a protest if they walked cheerfully by with the bands playing When Irish Eyes Are Smiling and other popular non flammatory ditties like Macnamara's Band, Killarney's Lake and Dells, The Star of the County Down, The Oul Lammas Fair, etc.

Particularly Irish Eyes, which would be more appropriate than national anthems at sporting events and entertainments generally. One man's anthem can be another man's anathema, and such clarion calls should be reserved for times of national peril - God forbid.

Sadly, "when Irish eyes are smiling (or is it when Irish hearts are happy?) all the world seems bright and gay" can't be used any more - "all the world's in bright array" perhaps. - Yours etc
