Sir, In response to John Markhams defence of the LUAS system, can I make the following points. Compared to the disciplined traffic commuters in Karlsruhe and other European towns, the Irish motorist is notoriously bad for observing lanes, so there is, no reason to expect the normal body of rush hour traffic to stay off tram lines. The result is that the trams become part of the traffic chaos. The quart into a pint pot syndrome will apply.
Having just taken 55 minutes to drive from DIT Aungier Street down Georges Street, Dame Street, Westmoreland Street to finish at the Abbey Street junction of O'Connell Street at 5 p.m. on a Thursday afternoon, I can only wince at the thought of the same body of traffic trying to negotiate the areas where the LUAS is being installed. The moral would appear to be avoid the whole area before during and probably after the introduction of LUAS, except on Sundays at 7.30 a.m. Yours, etc., Dunshaughlin, Co. Meath.
