Sir, – Ronit Lentin (July 20th) urges the Government "to call for an end to the siege of Gaza".
However, while the allegation of siege appears frequently in the pages of your newspaper (for example, Michael Jansen’s news report, July 14th), this does not mean that it is true.
Although Israel has established a blockade to prevent arms and materials which could be used to build rockets from reaching Hamas, there has been no siege and, even during times of war, Israel has consistently maintained a steady flow of food and medical supplies to the population of Gaza.
In addition, ever since Israel’s unilateral withdrawal from the Gaza Strip, Palestinian patients in need of urgent medical attention not readily available in the Strip have been allowed to cross the border and attend hospitals in Israel. – Yours, etc,
