Irish pigs to China

Sir – Yesterday, Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine Charlie McConalogue tweeted about how happy he is to be sending “product” to China.

By product he means live pigs for breeding in their giant factory farms.

The UN has listed ending factory farming as a priority to curb greenhouse gas emissions. Instead we are contributing to this by sending these unfortunate animals to a country where pig farms can be as big as seven million animals! From an animal welfare perspective it is appalling.

From an environmental perspective it is contra-indicated on every level. Seriously Minister, what planet are you on?
