IRELAND'S DRINK PROBLEM

MAUD WHITE,

MAUD WHITE,

Sir, - I agree with Alice Johnson (May 31st) that alcoholism is a calamity. I would also add that drinking to get drunk is a cultural hole which we have willingly dug for ourselves. Of course the drinkers or drunkards don't really care; after all, the competitive binge and brag syndrome is a badge of Irish "culture" and therefore a vital justification of a "social" life. (Imagine having no hangover to report in the workplace on a Monday.)

A shift to moderation would therefore be perceived as social suicide for the nation and bankruptcy for the publicans. As for the drunkards, they would have to get a life. Far too challenging. - Yours, etc.,

Sir, - To help reduce alcohol consumption, I suggest the following, for starters:

1. A ban on alcohol advertising.

2. A ban on the "rounds" system.

3. Free soft drinks for the driver among a group of drinkers.

4. Cheap and cheerful soft drinks in pubs, with an option of tea or coffee.

5. Some alternative to pubs for young people - soft drinks bars with some form of entertainment or activity.

6. Compulsory ID cards for everyone.

7. Return to earlier closing hours.

These ideas are all so obvious, but has the Government or the pub trade the will to exert their authority in such matters? - Yours, etc.,
