Sir, - Ulick's surprise (February 6th) at Sir Patrick's "Unction dripping oozing assumed concern", is naive. After all what does one expect from Worcester graduates if not sauce?
I think what Ulick was trying to say is better expressed on p. 186 of that beautiful book on that Presbyterian saint, Helen Waddell, where she speaks of some of her extreme Tory friends "... He's typical of the men about Dublin Castle. At the back of his mind there's a sort of race contempt - he can't help it. Long before Sinn Fein it was there. A solitary inflection of his voice illuminates history. A phrase of his has taught me more of the hate of the conquered race than all the history I have (not) read. Nothing but the grace of God will keep you from belittling the qualities you haven't got."
Apropos of the book in question - Helen Waddell by Dom Felicitas Corrigan, may I appeal to all extreme unionists, and extreme nationalists - North and South - to beg borrow or steal a copy? It will do more towards bringing people together than all the accumulated efforts of the last 25 years.
And finally, do any of your readers know if the author was the nun involved in the controversy with G.B.S.? - Yours, etc.,
Dalkey, Co Dublin.
