Sir, – Mary Burke (July 18th) is correct in pointing out the somewhat poor value in hotels in Dublin.
However, what is worse is the hyperinflation that tends to happen around special events in the city, such as big concerts, finals in Croke Park, etc.
Given that our politicians had no problem capping rents in the city, how about some sort of cap on hotel rates? After all, short-term greed from our hoteliers hardly helps build a long-term tourist offering.
There could simply be a limit whereby prices could only be increased to double the average charged over the previous three months.

If we don’t do this, prices for the likes of the Rugby World Cup (assuming we get it) will increase up to five-fold, at the expense of long-term tourism. – Yours, etc,
