‘Hi there’ and other salutations

Sir, – As Tony Corcoran says (Letters, April 13th), "Hi" is not always appropriate in emails.

I confess to using it quite often, but when formality requires I tend to use “Good Morning”, although the person may not be receiving it in the morning. “Dear Sir” may be okay when you know you are addressing a man, but frequently you don’t know. I dislike “Dear Sir /Madam”, so that leaves me with “Good Morning”, or sometimes plain “Hello”. – Yours, etc,
