Government envoy for undocumented

Sir, – I am surprised to see that the Government has appointed a TD, John Deasy, to lobby for and to act on behalf of Irish illegal immigrants in the US ("Deasy appointed as US envoy to work for undocumented", July 1st).

Ireland has no right to interfere in the immigration rules of another state, nor to encourage illegal activity anywhere. Such actions should be regarded by the US as subversive.

It would not be unreasonable for the US government to protest formally to the Irish Government about such an appointment, to refuse to engage with Mr Deasy and to deny him an entry visa into the United States. – Yours, etc,

GARRY BURY,
