Sir, – When I read about plans to cut down mature trees to facilitate a bike path around Fairview Park and to restrict cars to one lane on one of the worst bottlenecks in the city, I feel I am living in a surreal world where reason does not apply.
There already is a bike path that runs straight through Fairview Park.
It is about 80 metres shorter than the route around the park and is completely separated from traffic.
Upgrading this path, if necessary, would be easier and cheaper than going around the park. Cyclists will continue to use the shortest route in any case, which is through the park. I always do. – Yours, etc,

Sir, – Regarding the perceived “loss” of one of the seven traffic lanes in Fairview, it must be pointed out that the traffic lane will not be lost, it will simply be repurposed as a safe, segregated, and much-needed cycle track.
The privileged, vocal minority of gas-guzzling, space-consuming, toxic fume-spouting, single-occupancy private vehicle owners who are pitching a fit over this “radical” and “controversial” redistribution of road space should be invited to join the rest of us in a 21st-century Dublin where vital public space is allocated fairly to the overwhelming majority who walk, cycle and use public transport. – Yours, etc,
