A chara, – John Bruton’s candidature for the position of the president of the European Council is to be welcomed, not least as it juxtaposes and highlights the Taoiseach’s impulsive and premature endorsement of Tony Blair. A matter arises however, particularly for those in mass media, commentary and political spheres: there is a tendency to use the term “EU president” as accepted lexicon. The use of this term does not represent the true position, albeit it rolls of the tongue far more easily than the official title.

Continued use of the term will serve only to blur the true designation, role and function of the president of the European Council, and will no doubt be capitalised upon by some of those who advocated a No vote.

This is a man who waged an unprovoked and illegal war in Iraq and lied to the House of Commons for his actions. This war was called against the evidence of the intelligence service MI6, foreign secretary Jack Straw and the wishes of the British people. The threat of the weapons of mass destruction was the constant bogus cry of George Bush and Mr Blair as their justification for the criminal act of invasion and aggression against the innocent people of Iraq. This man should no longer be considered fit to hold any political office in Britain or Europe. – Yours, etc,
