Madam, - Ann Roden (August 21st) describes drunken behaviour on the 11 a.m. Galway to Dublin train on August 13th, challenging Iarnród Éireann's reference to "isolated incidents" of this kind.
As a passenger on the next train (2.40 p.m.) from Dublin to Galway on the same day, I can confirm that similar drunken behaviour was in evidence.
However, what was already an unpleasant experience turned into a potentially serious situation, after the engine broke down on three occasions leaving us stranded on the tracks without power for over two hours.
The train was totally reliant on air-conditioning, which meant windows could not be opened. Passengers were ordered not to leave the train.
It was one of the hottest afternoons in the year. The air-conditioning was working in only one of the carriages. The train was packed. And throughout all this time alcohol continued to be sold on the train!
Iarnród Éireann needs to recognise that alcohol and engine failures are a cocktail for disaster. - Yours, etc.,
