Sir, - With the frightening prospect of another summer of inter-community violence in the North, and given the lack of response so far to appeals for peace, dialogue and flexibility, could the Christian churches not acknowledge that heroic measures are called for? They should consider:
1. Re-affirming that extremists on both sides cannot call themselves members of Christian churches, as their thinking and actions are a direct contradiction of the meaning of Christianity.
2. Breaking all boundaries to demonstrate practically what Christianity does call for, by sharing worship across community, inviting Ministers of other churches to address services/Mass - particularly where these are associated with parades - and generally stretching every rule and interpretation to the limit to insist on a visible Christian relationship between all denominations in worship and other activities of the churches. - Yours, etc.,
Maggie Blackley, Gurrane, Fermoy, Co Cork.
