Sir, – Mary Stewart (January 26th) refers to Peter, "the first pope", who, as she says, was "responsible for interpreting the teaching of Jesus".
Peter was himself a married man, a status denied to contemporary candidates for the priesthood. It is the present hierarchy that is out of step with the teaching and action of Jesus in this matter. – Yours, etc,
