A chara, - Now that the Bishop of Cloyne, Dr John Magee, has emerged from the obscurity of the past 25 years to remind us of "The Alleluia Weekend of Ireland" perhaps he might give us his own account of the facts surrounding the death of Pope John Paul I in 1978.
The then Father Magee was one of the few who were associated with the last hours of the 33-day Pope's life and in David Yallop's book In God's Name he is mentioned as a central figure in the Papal Office and is said to have dined with the Pontiff on the night of his death.
As a devout Catholic who has found great difficulty in coming to terms with the Church scandals of the past decade, I believe Dr Magee could counter the claims and allegations contained in Yallop's book and restore confidence in the Papacy in preparation for John Paul's second coming to the "Island of Saints and Scholars". - Is mise,
