David Drumm and the zeros

Sir, – Fintan O’Toole believes that “when numbers have enough zeros on the end of them they have zero real-life meaning” (“David Drumm was a little man,” Weekend Review, June 23rd).

He then proceeds to omit the zeros and refer to €7.2 billion of “phoney deposits” and separately refers to €29 billion of “toxic sludge”.

The numbers seven and 29 are both numbers that have real life meaning: they could form the result of a rugby match or be the buses you need to take to get from Monkstown to Marino. The numbers 7,200,000,000 and 29,000,000,000 on the other hand are slightly more difficult to assimilate. – Yours, etc,

FRANK TURVEY,
