Sir, – Further to "Ireland to get nine new power plants by 2024 to prevent shortages" (Business, February 4th), Dublin is the data centre capital of Europe, the ravenous beasts consuming 144 per cent more electricity in 2020 than 2015. Their proliferation continues.

To avoid power cuts, the life of coal- and oil-burning power stations will be extended, and nine new gas-fired power plants will be built by 2024, leading to millions of tons of unnecessary carbon dioxide emissions.
