Daniel Macdonald

Sir, – I am curating an exhibition of the work of Daniel Macdonald – the Cork artist who painted the only known painting of the Great Famine. The exhibition will take place in Ireland’s Great Hunger Museum, Quinnipiac University, Connecticut, in 2016.

Macdonald was born in 1820, into a remarkable family of artists, men of science and medicine, and explorers.

I am appealing to readers who may know of the location of paintings and papers of Daniel Macdonald (1820-1853); James McDaniel/Macdonald (his father) (circa 1789-1865); and Jane Masters Macdonald Rogers (his sister) (circa 1823-1909). This will be the first exhibition of this undeservedly forgotten artist, who died tragically young in London, aged 32, in 1853. – Yours, etc,

Prof NIAMH O’SULLIVAN
