Sir, – Una Mullally claims that "Irish media is obsessed with contrarianism and loudmouths. It is obsessed even more with the contrarian voices who are generally merely out to seek attention" ("Women playing rugby do not deserve to be mauled", Opinion & Analysis, August 14th).
This is an extraordinary claim, in a country where consensus is the national sport, and where every major media outlet leans left – on social issues, at any rate.
The number of prominent conservatives in Irish public life could easily fit in a minibus.
I find myself wondering what an Irish TV or radio debate would be like, in your columnist’s vision of a proper state of affairs.

Would it be five or six panellists agreeing that Irish society is fundamentally racist, sexist, homophobic, and Islamophobic, and disagreeing over the exact extent of this prejudice, and what to do about it?
