Sir, - I would like to congratulate the Republic of Ireland soccer team on their wonderful uplifting winning performance on against Italy – not forgetting the much maligned FAI and the management team, who all deserve great credit.
I have always wondered why the soccer authorities here (they are not perfect) nearly always appear to get bad press. The GAA and rugby, on the contrary, seem to get mainly positive press coverage.
There are many budding soccer players, including my grandchildren, who are crazy about the game. Let’s have loads of positivity and support them and their coaches.
Having played all three codes myself, I would like to think that we should all rejoice on this occasion and maybe get our revenge on the French (remember Thierry Henry).
