Clonfin and ethical remembering

A chara, – Marie Coleman's vignettes of the various Auxiliaries involved in the Clonfin ambush, in particular the man from Laois, brought on feelings of sympathy, if not regret that they were there at all ("Clonfin ambush can teach us about ethical remembering", Opinion & Analysis, February 24th).

But the fact is that he and they were soldiers of a government that was rejecting by violent force the democratic will of the Irish people for independence, as expressed by an overwhelming majority in the election of 1918.

As were the men of the RIC that chose to keep wearing the uniform even as they were reinforced by the Black and Tans. – Is mise,
