Climate change and political action

Sir, – Your timely editorial (October 18th) on the Government's approach to climate change is to be applauded. As you rightly indicate, we are sleepwalking into possibly the greatest calamity the planet has ever faced.

Those of us with any regard for the kind of world we will leave to our grandchildren must demand political leadership that is far more proactive in countering the causes of climate change than presently exists.

Good governance transcends purely economic issues. We should no longer tolerate political parties and election candidates with no understanding of impending climatic impacts and that ignore scientific advice and predictions on this matter.

Within the next decade or two, new land-use strategies are imperative if we are to avoid the worst effects of impacts such as flooding, tidal surges and rising storm intensity. – Yours, etc,
