Sir, – As a Christian, Margaret Butler (December 18th) is surely aware that "the core of Christian belief" is in fact Easter. This is reflected in the Greek Orthodox tradition. The cultural weight given to Christmas in northern countries is due to the historical need to keep spirits up at a grim and dangerous time of year.
While pagans and other non-Christians are happy for Christians to enthusiastically join this community effort to see each other through to another springtime, it’s a little (dare I say it?) unchristian to claim the festivities solely for yourself and take offence at the harmless revelry of others.
Wishing a wonderful festive season to all and sundry. – Yours, etc,

Sir, – I am one of the smart alecs who has unwittingly offended Margaret Butler (December 18th).
Can I assure your correspondent that in wishing a Merry Chrimbo greeting I am neither trying to demean the core of Christian belief nor myself. Merely trying to spread some Christmas cheer.
Ms Butler may need reminding that this is the season of goodwill to all. – Yours, etc,
