Sir, - I have long felt that a marker for the level of sophistication of a society is the way it looks after its most vulnerable members. With this in mind it would seem as if we Irish have been left far behind by our Celtic cousins in Scotland. Despite not living on the back of a large Tiger and having had to give up their own pot of gold (North Sea oil) to Westminster, they have managed to extend free nursing care to all of the elderly who need it.
