MARK ARMSTRONG,
Sir, - In the week ending May 26th, a publicity campaign was launched to encourage Leaving Cert students to apply for IT courses to counteract the fall in applications for such courses.
This fall is perhaps a reaction to the collapse in the hiring of IT graduates in the last calendar year (representing two years of graduates).
A possible solution would be for the IT industry and Government to co-sponsor a graduate scheme. Trainees could, for instance, be hired on a one-year contract to be paid around €120 a week, topped up by the equivalent of Social Welfare.

The Government contribution could be paid back by students who secure a position after their contract expires. - Yours, etc.,
