Madam, – The single biggest impediment to a large tax increase on cigarettes has been the unions’ insistence that it be retained in the Consumer Price Index (CPI).
Are they willing to give way on this issue for the good of the country or, with the Rev Ian Paisley mellowing in recent years, should the “not an inch” baton now be passed to them? – Yours, etc,
