Sir, – Denis Staunton ("Tory grassroots pressure on Johnson all going in one direction", Analysis, Weekend, January 17th) sums up the problems with respect to the British prime minister and the Conservative party very neatly.
But there is one side of the conversation he leaves out. It is the small body of opposition opinion that hopes Boris Johnson remains in place. Not because they like him, but because they believe the longer he stays in office, the more damage he is likely to do to the Conservatives. This matters more.
There have been changes of leadership in the past (as Denis Staunton points out), yet the Conservative party goes sailing on. Now there is one captain who can, without much effort, blow a hole in that boat and so change the course of British politics. – Yours, etc,
