Banks and their customers

Sir, – I am disturbed by a vague suspicion that, before long, banks will impose a charge to get into the building and an additional fee should one wish to be greeted with civility by a human being. – Yours, etc,

JACK O’CONNELL,

Sir, – Current account-type banking services are not optional in today’s society. Most employers, State services, bill payments, etc, are now carried out through bank transfer, direct debit, and so on. This effectively makes current account services an essential utility rather than a preference yet the banks clearly want to have little or nothing to do with this end of the banking business.

An Post already operates bill payment, foreign exchange and other financial services. Furthermore it has an extensive network of branches right across urban and rural Ireland. Would it not make sense for An Post to offer basic, low-cost current account banking? It could increase business for the branch network and perhaps make it more financially stable, in addition to providing a necessary service. – Yours, etc,
