Banking and technology

Sir, – In their headlong drive to reduce direct contact with their customers, the banks now find themselves saddled with computer systems that are poorly developed and understood and are inflexible. Staff seem to work long, demoralising hours answering helplines and apologising for the incompetence of their employers.

Customers are trapped with their current bank because there is no competition and one is apparently as bad as the other. People are afraid to move banks because it will introduce a fresh set of problems.

We all know the banks did their bit to break the country but it is reasonable to expect that they will do their best to help repair it by doing simple things well for small businesses. – Yours, etc,

TOM O’DOWD,
