Arts advertisement sparks no joy

Sir, – The National Campaign for the Arts is currently running an advertising campaign which claims that, “Without the arts there would be nothing . . . no spectacle, no joy, no excitement, no beauty, no point.”

Such mindless sloganeering, arrogantly ignoring the fact that many people find all those things in, to give just three examples, sport, religion or gardening, does the arts and artists no service whatsoever. – Yours, etc,

DAVID McKENNA,
