Arise, Dame Edna

Sir, – Of course Edna O’Brien should accept the honour bestowed on her by the British; not only for her brilliant writing, but for her lyrical articulation of the English language. What a joy to listen to her lilting pronunciation of every word. Perhaps some of our eminent broadcasters should take lessons from listening to her dulcet interpretation of how this beautiful language should be spoken. – Yours, etc,

Sir, – Once again, for the umpteenth time, we read the myth of Edna O’Brien being “denounced from the pulpit of her Co Clare church in an attack on her early novels” (April 17th).

This is singularly untrue.

This claim has been researched thoroughly several times and it is established beyond all doubt, by the competent sources, that such a condemnation never took place.

For heaven’s sake let us profess, for once and for all, the truth regarding this recurring “urban legend”! – Yours, etc,

A chara, – I’m struggling to remember here but was Edna O’Brien ever offered a seat in Seanad Éireann? – Is mise,
