Sir, – David Lowther (Letters, September 29th) makes a very sensible proposal that everyone should be entitled to a day of rest on their birthday. Those born on February 29th may not agree! – Yours, etc,

Sir, – David Lowther proposes an individual bank holiday on your birthday so that, without closing essential services, “everybody would get an extra day off”.

Would this mean that those who were born in a leap year could expect four consecutive days when their birthday comes around? – Yours, etc,

Sir, – Squeezing an extra public holiday into the remaining days of 2021 will prove problematic for most employers who are already challenged by what has become the lengthy break at Christmas and New Year.

Looking at next year’s calendar, nominating Friday March 18th would give most workers a four-day break as it is adjacent to St Patrick’s Day.

It would also closely coincide with the first Covid-19 death in this State in 2020 and the beginning of the first “lockdown”. This would give it real meaning.

Finally, can we please stop using the term “bank holiday”. It is outmoded and, compared to even 10 years ago, there are very few bank branches to be physically closed on such a day. – Yours, etc,

Sir, – It seems almost certain that the current Government, in an attempt to curry popularity, will soon grant us another day off, but what date should it choose?

If we are serious about eventual Irish unity, the obvious date must surely be the Twelfth of July. – Yours, etc,
