A more inclusive island

Sir, – May I make two observations in relation to the divisions caused by peace walls and parades by the Orange Order? First, the creation of an all-Ireland soccer team, both for men and women, would be a great help towards creating mutual accord and understanding. It is long overdue. Other sports – for example, rugby and cricket – have been played on an all-Ireland basis for many years. It would also improve the soccer teams!

Secondly, the celebrations by the Orange Order should give due recognition to the role of Pope Innocent XI at that time. Not only did he refuse to support the Catholic kings James 11 and Louis XIV but also he was critical of Louis XIV for revoking the Edict of Nantes in 1685, which had granted freedom to Protestants to practice their religion. In short, the pope supported William of Orange and those who practised the Protestant religion.

Reflection on this fact might help to create parades that are more inclusive and less divisive. – Yours, etc,

Dr BRIAN P MURPHY, OSB
