Sir, – As a retired liver transplant programme social worker (in the US), I was shocked to read that Maedhbh McGivern’s liver transplant had to be cancelled because of lack of air transportation which could get her to King’s College Hospital, London by the 2am deadline. It later transpired apparently that the King’s College hospital consultant could have arranged the RAF to fly Maedhbh over – had he known earlier.
While communication does seem to have been an issue, I would also wonder if there might not have been the owner of a private airplane in Ireland who would have been glad to provide transportation if an appeal (via radio and television) had been made.
Perhaps owners of private airplanes and corporate planes could be solicited for willingness to provide flights in situations of urgent need – and a list of those willing compiled.
My experience has been that there is often great generosity of spirit when help is asked for. – Yours, etc,
