Madam, - My car broke down in Dame Street during heavy traffic on Saturday 27th September.
A Nigerian gentleman appeared at my window and offered help. He kindly pushed the car to the kerbside and enquired if there was anything else he could do. He was in fact a taxi-driver and was already engaged. He offered his mobile phone with which I was able to get help. He refused to accept payment for the call.
He agreed to take two ladies who were passengers in my car to their destination. He returned within ten minutes and courteously took care of my request.
I understand that he is an immigrant living in this country for three years. We neglected to find out his name or even the registration number of his taxi.
However I would like to make our experience with this immigrant public, and hope that he and others who have to leave their native country will find an appreciative and welcoming society in this country. - Yours, etc.,
WILLIAM COTTER, Dollymount Avenue, Dublin 3.
