A city that supports disabled people

Sir, – Access for All Galway applauds Irish Cities 2070's long-range masterplan for a pedestrianised, motor-free Galway ("A new vision for Galway: 'It will choke unless it changes'", News, April 16th).

Using the pedestrianised city of Freiburg, Germany, as a guide, the requirement for motorists to shift to bicycles or buses at park-and-ride stops outside the city is admirable. However, we would expect that the architects and designers behind the plan also incorporate Freiburg’s focus on barrier-free transport, including wheelchair-accessible vehicles, elevated platforms, mobile folding ramps and tactile guide strips. A city that does not support disabled people, who make up its most marginalised residents, will also choke. – Yours, etc,
