To install such a charger we must upgrade our electricity supply, costing thousands

Sir, – My family recently purchased an electric vehicle. We applied to have an EV charger installed at our house – a tortuous process – then it transpired that to install the charger we must upgrade our electricity supply system, costing thousands of euro.

Nobody told us this in advance. My advice to anyone considering getting an electric car is to have their house surveyed by an electrician first. As it stands, it will take decades for any savings on fuel costs to cover the outlay on an upgraded electricity system. This fact should be flagged in advertisements for electric cars, SEAI grants etc, – Yours, etc,
