Safe as eggs in a Citroën 2CV

Apparently its designer said he wanted ‘an umbrella on wheels’

Sir, – My first car was a “preloved” Citroën Deux Chevaux, complete with canvas roof. Though designed originally in the 1930s for the French rural community, who up to then did not have any suitable or affordable wagon, the basic model was still largely unchanged up to the late 1960s.

Apparently its designer said he wanted “an umbrella on wheels” that would seat two farmers, wearing their hats and each holding a basket of eggs and also storing 50kg of farm produce each, and get them over rough roads to market without breaking any of the eggs.

It must have worked. As far as I can remember, I, too, broke no eggs during my shopping trips in that quirky little banger. – Yours, etc,

RODNEY DEVITT,

Sandymount,
