Sir – Meaningful progress regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is unlikely to materialise while Israel’s prime minister Binyamin Netanyahu is in office, and it seems lasting peace, if achieved, will occur only through political agreement.
Since October 2023, many very complex geopolitical issues have been reduced to slogans, social media trends and what is now commonly known as “virtue signalling”.
The loudest voices appear to have a superficial understanding of the historical, political and sectarian complexities involved, and the narrative casts either side as wholly virtuous or wholly villainous. Without minimising the seriousness of the appalling atrocities which have occurred, never before has there been a greater tendency for distant conflicts such as this to attract attention because they are politically fashionable.
Why are we not asking questions about governance and accountability on both sides, including how international aid to the Palestinian territories has been managed over the past several decades?

While I only have immense sympathy for ordinary Palestinian civilians, I do not need to go to a Macklemore concert to affirm this. Public debate has become polarised, and perhaps, due to inertia or fatigue, we have outsourced our judgment to social media algorithms.
This is part of the reason why complex historical and political issues are now reduced to slogans, social media campaigns, concerts, flags and bracelets rather than a vital, informed discussion.
I sincerely hope there is a change in leadership in Israel on October 27th to create the momentum required to begin meaningful negotiations towards peace for both groups. – Yours, etc,
RITA O’BRIEN,
