Sir, – It was so reassuring and informative to read John Burns letter (“The case for meditation in Irish education”, Letters, September 24th). As a school chaplain and religious education teacher for 15 years, I have always incorporated meditation and quiet time for students into my professional approach with classes I teach.
It is my belief that, as students get older, progress through school and become more prone to stress, they need more meditation and quiet time. However, this is only beneficial if they have been exposed to it and its benefits at a younger age.
If human flourishing is to be an aim or goal of our education system, we would do well to remember that we need to cater to young people from the perspective of the head, heart and hands. – Yours, etc,
STEPHEN O’HARA,
