Remembering Frank McDonald

He was a lovely, charming man

The Irish Times - Letters to the Editor.

Sir, – I knew Frank McDonald well from the early days of the Temple Bar development. For all his radical and sophisticated urbanism, a part of his spirit remained rooted in suburban northside Dublin, where he grew up, a true 1960s Christian Brothers boy.

He was a lovely, charming man; a blithe spirit indeed. We are reduced by his going.

May his gentle soul rest in peace. – Yours, etc

OWEN HICKEY,

Goatstown,

Dublin 14.

Sir, – The late Frank McDonald once memorably described the St Stephen’s Green Shopping Centre as a “Mississippi riverboat”.

This apposite description stuck with me, so much so that whenever I look up at the “vessel’s” top deck, I invariably get a vision of Mark Twain peering out of its pilothouse. – Yours, etc,

PAUL DELANEY,

Dalkey.
