Sir, – As the school “runs” resume and the traffic builds up on the main routes through our cities and towns, once again motorists will instinctively take the route which shortens their commute.
In the part of Dublin where I live, I witness countless cars every weekday morning and evening using a street that is for pedestrians and cyclists only during rush hour, turning on to streets that prohibit rush hour traffic and racing through red traffic lights endangering pedestrians and other road users.
No doubt, these motorists were as horrified as the rest of us by the crash on August 16th on the M9, but somehow fail to see that road signage on suburban streets is as legally directive as on motorways.
To compound the problem, many will be using their hand-held mobile phones.

They are probably not uploading videos to TikTok but it is still illegal behaviour.
The scale of the M9 crash will be quickly forgotten but the toll of deaths will continue at the rate of two or three a week.
Every driver should examine their behaviour as part of a September “reset” and play their part in reducing the collisions caused by selfish disregard for other road users, especially on our urban and suburban streets. – Yours, etc,
